A special message
from Richard ...
I am a versatile writer who can handle a wide range of topics, and I am available for writing and/or editing assignments that I can handle remotely from Miami, Florida.
In June 2009, I retired from university teaching after more than 30 years as a professor of English. During that time I published seven non-fiction books and numerous articles directed to both academic and general readers. My books cover such diverse subjects as the films of Woody Allen and Ridley Scott; American literature, film, and popular culture related to the Cold War; the history of the Cold War; the military action and political developments of the first Persian Gulf War; and social/political/cultural histories of America in the 1950s and the 1990s.
Despite the variations in subject matter, my writing has been uniformly praised for its clarity and accessibility. Choice Magazine, a reference publication for libraries, named my Cold War Reference Guide an outstanding academic book for 1997. In 1998, I appeared "live" on the Internet as a featured guest specialist on Cold War culture, in CNN's online follow-up to its acclaimed television documentary on the Cold War.
I also single-handedly wrote three complete issues of Pathways, the magazine for the Diabetes Research Institute, for which I interviewed researchers and then described for lay audiences the most current research into diabetes at the time. Moreover, I have edited articles and books on international finance by Professor Emmanuel Roussakis, one of Florida International University's preeminent researchers in the field. I worked as a computer programmer in the 1970s, and participated in three summer-long seminars on the history of science sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities at Harvard University, University of California-Berkeley, and University of Maryland. I have published numerous book reviews and an opera review.
I was director of film studies at Florida International University, where I routinely taught courses about history of film, film and society, and film aesthetics. And I am currently circulating three original screenplays: The Last Sibyl's Story, a rendering of the life of Alcibiades, the ancient Athenian who single-handedly determined the course of the Peloponnesian War; and adaptations of novels by Mark Twain and William Faulkner. I have also self published a semi-absurdist novel, The Conflicted Liberal, about a professor who takes up pie-throwing as a form of political protest.
If you have any projects that you think might be well suited for me, I would be happy to discuss them with you.
Sincerely,
Richard A. Schwartz, Ph.D.
